Energy and Spectral Efficiencies of OFDM-based Visible Light Communication

Summary:

Visible light communication (VLC) has become a competitive wireless communication candidate technology for the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) especially for Africa. First, in this talk a brief overview of the VLC technology will be given. Second, the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based VLC schemes, including asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), layered ACO (LACO) OFDM, and direct current biased (DCO) optical OFDM will be illustrated. Third, the energy efficiency and the spectral efficiency of the above mentioned OFDM-based VLC schemes will be discussed and compared for the practical consideration of illumination and transmission. This talk is mainly based on the work by Yaqi Sun, Fang Yang, and Ling Cheng "An overview of OFDM-based visible light communication systems from the perspective of energy efficiency versus spectral efficiency" IEEE Access 6 (2018): 60824-60833.
