Marie-Louise is an electronic engineer who has been working in the field of project management for more than fifteen years.  She is currently a lecturer at the Graduate School of Technology Management, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She has previously served the Business Unit: Defence Peace Safety and Security, CSIR as a project manager in Radar and Electronic Warfare. She obtained her project management professional certification with the international Project management institute in 2001 and completed a Masters degree in Project Management, with distinction, at the University of Pretoria in 2003.  She is also active in the IEEE and serves the IEEE South Africa Section as the chair: Professional Activities Committee (key activity), as well as a member of the Technology Management Council Chapter.  She has presented papers and workshops at the various project conferences.  She is currently pursuing a PhD in project management.  Her most challenging project to date is getting her almost teenager son to school on time every day!

How to utilise emotional intelligence attributes to establish the right project environment

Description of the Workshop:

Various sophisticated tools, techniques and procedures exist in order to facilitate the management of projects.  Despite this, why do projects still fail?  Obviously there is no one simplistic answer but according to several studies (White et al. 2002 and Belout, 1998) the so-called soft skills are great contributors to project success or failure. One of the measures of soft skills developed in recent years is Emotional Intelligence.  Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to understand, value and wisely manage emotions in relationship to oneself and others (Bourey, 2001).

This workshop introduces the components of emotional intelligence to the participants.  The applicability of the various components of emotional intelligence to the project manager is discussed and explored through various hands on exercises that are conducted individually as well as in groups.

 

Summary of the Workshop:

The workshop sets the scene by exploring project management, what it is, the high failure rate of projects and why we need to do project management in organisations.  The importance of soft skills in project management is explored next.

The definition of emotional intelligence and all the different components of emotional intelligence follow.  Each component of emotional intelligence i.e. self awareness, social awareness, self management and relationship management is then explored in more detail.

The exploration of these concepts is done through discussion and practical exercises in which participants take part individually and in groups.

Finally a non psychometric measure of emotional intelligence is given to the participants so that they can further explore their own emotional intelligence in their work environment.

 

History of the Workshop:

The workshop was first presented at the IQPC Complex Project Management Conference in March 2006 in Sydney Australia.  The workshop has also been presented in form of a tutorial for the IEEE GOLD Affinity Group (Northern Region), IEEE South Africa Section.
